Estimate sand weight by filter diameter (quick reference).
Sand filters depend on the correct amount of filter media to work properly. Too little media can reduce filtration performance, while too much can interfere with backwashing, restrict flow, or damage internal components.
Sand capacity generally increases with tank diameter because wider tanks hold a larger filter bed. However, two filters with the same diameter may still require different amounts because tank height, internal design, and manufacturer specifications can vary.
Most traditional residential sand filters are designed for #20-grade silica sand. This media has a specific particle size that allows water to pass while trapping dirt and debris. Playground sand, masonry sand, and other substitutes should not be used unless the manufacturer specifically approves them.
Glass media often weighs less than silica sand for the same filter because it has a different density. Many brands recommend using approximately 10% to 20% less by weight, but the exact conversion depends on the product.
